Wells Publishing creates and operates the highest trafficked news and information sites in the property casualty insurance business. The Web Developer will play a key role in planning, building, improving, and maintaining new and current features and web sites to grow our web presence. We are looking for a Web Developer who loves what they do and takes pride in creating the best solutions. As an employee, you will have the opportunity to propose and lead the development of new projects and explore new technologies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan, mockup, develop, test new site features, web applications and web sites
  • Create new web pages and features and web applications for existing web sites
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, improve current web applications and web sites
  • Monitor online and email activity, create reports, make observations and recommendations

Requirements

  • This is a full-time, in-house position
  • Resourceful, Motivated, Accountable, Organized, Attention to detail, Problem-solver
  • 3+ years solid experience with PHP, MySQL and relational databases (including table joins, indexes, summary functions)
  • Proficient with HTML, CSS, web standards
  • Presents information effectively and creatively (page layout, font, color)
  • Understanding of HTTP/HTTPS, Cookies, Web standards and Browser issues, DOM, Filesystems, File permissions, Site structure, User experience, User tracking, Client-side vs Server-side, Basic networking, DNS
  • Working knowledge of basic web design principles including page layout, usability design, informational/content layout, cropping and optimizing images, separation of structure and style
  • Understands and appreciates web development best practices
  • Understands web site analytics and email analytics
  • Stays up-to-date on web development best practices and applies new knowledge to the job where appropriate
  • Creative problem solving (analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution)
  • Able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Flexible and able to change course quickly

Ideal Candidate

  • Past experience in B2B or consumer media
  • Solves problems versus doing tasks
  • CakePHP, Drupal
  • prototype, scriptaculous, jQuery
  • SVN
  • Familiar with online revenue models
  • Understands online advertising (terminology, metrics, capabilities)
  • Working knowledge of content management systems, ad serving technology and terminology, search engines, search engine optimization, ecommerce/payment processing
  • Works quickly and independently
  • Experience with PHP and javascript frameworks
  • Experience in conversion, analytics, SEO, SEM
  • Data mining and manipulation
